Space Colonies Of The Future As Imagined By Nasa In The 1970S

The goal was to build a 10,000-person orbiting community with materials and technologies available to people in the 1970s. The whole project was designed to be cost-effective. Humans would harvest the mineral riches of asteroids (such as cobalt, iron, nickel and platinum). Artists were commissioned to imagine what these slowly rotating complexes would like (rotation was needed to provide gravity). These visions of space colonies and our general future in space were gripping and ignited the imagination of more than a few young dreamers....

The Burning Monk 1963

John F. Kennedy said in reference to a photograph of Duc on fire: “No news picture in history has generated so much emotion around the world as that one”. Photographer Malcolm Browne captured the scene in Saigon for the Associated Press, and the stark black and white image quickly became an iconic visual of the turbulent 1960s. The self-immolation was done in protest of the South Vietnamese Diem regime’s pro-catholic policies and discriminatory Buddhist laws....

The German Embassy In Sweden Flying The Flag At Half Mast The Day Hitler Died 1945

Actually, Hitler’s death wasn’t officially announced until May 1st, but the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht (German High Command) obviously got the news well before that and might have informed embassies so they could bring the news out worldwide on May 1st, but perhaps the flag got lowered to half-mast prematurely in Sweden. Germany did not invade Sweden because Sweden was traditionally a neutral country for over 200 years and Hitler did not want to bother Sweden when he already had Norway, a more strategically located nation....

The Irish Land War Seen Through Rare Photographs 1880 1900

The movement emerged during a severe agricultural depression caused by crop failures and a sluggish market for farm produce. Economic conditions for farmers took a serious downturn in 1877, recovered partially in 1878, but deteriorated again in 1879. Unrest began on a small scale in late 1878, grew slowly during the early months of 1879, and then accelerated in the spring of 1879 when a series of public meetings were held in the western province of Connaught....

The Rise And Fall Of The Pet Rock A Look Back At The 1975 Holiday Craze

The Pet Rock, a simple rock with googly eyes glued on and nestled in a cardboard box with a bed of straw, became an instant sensation and cultural phenomenon. Despite its humble origins, the Pet Rock became a symbol of the absurdity and excess of the era, as well as a testament to the power of clever marketing and the fickle nature of popular culture. The history of the Pet Rock dates back to 1975, when advertising executive Gary Dahl was joking around with friends about the challenges of pet ownership....

The Speech Where Adolf Hitler Declared War On The Usa 1941

The decision to declare war was made almost entirely by Adolf Hitler, without consultation. Hitler had received no advance notice from the Japanese about the attack on Pearl Harbor. Although he and his Foreign Minister Ribbentrop had verbally indicated a willingness to join Japan in the war against America however it broke out, Hitler had absolutely no formal treaty obligation to declare war on the United States. Such a treaty had in fact been drafted and circulated in the weeks prior to Pearl Harbor, but it remained unsigned....

The Story Of Sarajevo S Romeo And Juliet 1993

By the time they were finally removed from Sarajevo’s Vrbanja Bridge — still entwined — they had become symbols of enduring love caught in a senseless war. This is the story of Bosnia’s Romeo and Juliet. The Siege of Sarajevo (1992-1996), part of Yugoslavia’s Wars, was responsible for destroying lives, families, and the future of many residents. Nothing is more tragic than the story of childhood sweethearts Bosko Brkic and his girlfriend of nine years, Admira Ismic....

The Story Of The Radio Hat Through Vintage Photographs 1949

Soon pictures and news stories appeared in newspapers coast to coast. The articles typically included a photo of a young lady wearing the hat and a six-paragraph story. Although the radio hat had a futuristic appearance at the time, this was in fact due to technical limitations. While the transistor had been invented in 1947, it was still experimental and not widely available. The hat’s radio relied on vacuum tube technology, and Hoeflich made the tubes a prominent feature, as well as the loop aerial....

The Story Of Two Armenian Women Posing With Their Rifles Before Going To Battle Against The Ottomans 1895

The picture was taken in 1895, during the Hamidians massacres where thousands of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire were assassinated. The woman on the left has been identified as Eghisapet Sultania, the other woman is still unidentified. It’s not confirmed whether they were real fighters or just dressing up for the photo. Actually, there’s a note on the back of the original image that says “souvenir”. Both women did survive and eventually made their way to the US....

The Use Of Masks During The Spanish Flu Pandemic Through Old Photographs 1918

Newspapers provided instructions on “How to Make Masks at Home” and published photographs of masked nurses. Masks were just one of the “non-pharmaceutical interventions” or “social distancing” policies, to use modern terms, adopted to contain the epidemic, along with closing schools, prohibiting public gatherings, and advising changes in personal behavior. However, many people refused to wear them during the Spanish Flu of 1918, saying that government-mandated mask enforcement violated their civil liberties....

Vintage Selfies People Posing With Selfie Sticks Before They Were A Thing

However, the introduction of the selfie stick revolutionized group photography, making it easier than ever to snap the ideal shot. While the selfie stick may seem like a modern invention, its roots trace back further than one might think. The origins of homemade selfie sticks can be traced back to as early as 1925. An image from that year depicts a man using a long stick, extending beyond the frame, to capture a self-portrait with his wife....

In this picture, innocence is mixed with hate, the irony of a black man protecting the right of white people to assemble in protest against him. The Ku Klux Klan was holding a rally in the northeast Georgia community of Gainesville, where the white supremacist group hoped to breathe some life into its flagging revival campaign of the late 1980s and early 1990s. A Papuan Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel Guiding An Injured Australian Soldier Home 1942

During the war in Papua New Guinea, the local population who were sympathetic to the Australian troops would assist where they could. Alexander Graham Bell S Bizarre Tetrahedral Kites 1902 1912

In his continuous research, Bell became obsessed with the idea of creating a kite large enough to carry a man. He actually created the box kite design in this quest to create the ultimate kite. This particular design joined several triangular kites together with a frame to create a box. Doing so increased the kite’s surface area with little increase in weight – a good measure of improved flight capability....

British Tanks Maneuvering Trenches During The Battle Of Cambrai The First Use Of Tanks In Mass 1917

The Battle of Cambrai, fought in November-December 1917, proved to be a significant event in World War One. Cambrai was the first battle in which tanks were used en masse. In fact, Cambrai saw a mixture of tanks being used, heavy artillery and air power. Mobility, lacking for the previous three years in World War One, suddenly found a place on the battlefield – though it was not to last for the duration of the battle....

In the early 1980s, after Escobar had become rich but before he had started the campaign of assassinations and bombings that was to almost tear Colombia apart, he built himself a zoo. At the height of his power, Escobar was estimated to be worth more than $30 billion. He smuggled in elephants, giraffes, and other exotic animals, among them four hippos – three females and one male. Old Photographs Of Jerusalem In A Rare Heavy Snow 1921

The city is characterized by a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers, and mild, wet winters. Snow flurries usually occur once or twice a winter, although the city experiences heavy snowfall every three to four years, on average, with short-lived accumulation. The British were victorious over the Ottomans in the Middle East during World War I and victory in Palestine was a step towards dismemberment of that empire. General Sir Edmund Allenby, commander-in-chief of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force, entered Jerusalem on foot out of respect for the Holy City, on 11 December 1917....
