German Expedition To Tibet Led By Ernst Sch Fer 1938 1939

The Reichsführer-SS Himmler was attempting to avail himself of the reputation of Ernst Schäfer for Nazi propaganda and asked about his future plans. Ernst Schäfer responded he wanted to lead another expedition to Tibet. Ernst Schäfer wished his expedition to be under the patronage of the cultural department of the foreign affairs or of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (“German Research Foundation”) as indicated by his requests. Himmler was fascinated by Asian mysticism and therefore wished to send such an expedition under the auspices of the SS Ahnenerbe (SS Ancestral Heritage Society), and desired that Schäfer perform research based on Hans Hörbiger’s pseudo-scientific theory of “Glacial Cosmogony” promoted by the Ahnenerbe....

Kindertransport Saving Children From The Holocaust 1938 1939

People wear clothes that seem strange; the food is different too. Imagine feeling that great danger looms and threatens those you love most, yet you have no idea what might be happening to your family back home. This is what happened to ten thousand children who escaped Nazi-occupied countries on the Kindertransport, a rescue effort that took place from 1938 to 1939. Kindertransport, (German for “Children Transport”) was the nine-month rescue effort authorized by the British government and conducted by individuals in various countries and by assorted religious and secular groups that saved some 10,000 children, under age 17 and most of them Jewish, from Nazi Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland and the free city of Danzig (Gdańsk) by relocating them to the United Kingdom....

Life Before The Invention Of Autocad Photos From 1950 To 1980

Many types of equipment were required to complete a given drawing, such as drawing board, different grade pencils, erasers T-squares, set square, etc. The major disadvantage of a paper-based design was that you could not change the drawing after it was committed to paper. This would mean that if changes were required to the design, the engineers would need to create the sketches all over again. Examining the history of engineering drafting and design equivocally means looking at the history of man, the history of building things....

Searchlights On The Rock Of Gibraltar 1942

The glare from light reflecting off the fog doesn’t impact them as much, the benefit of the light in spotting bombers is greater than the harm of reduced visibility from glare. Gibraltar was a very big choke point, basically whoever owned it would be who got the use of the Mediterranean. No ship could get through this strait of Gibraltar without being sunk. Since the British owned it, it meant no Italian/German planes or boats could get through....

Stunning Vintage Photos Of The Marine Angel Vessel Transiting The Chicago River 1953

This steel hull behemoth was nearly 634 feet long (193m) and 70 feet wide (21.3m) and according to a Chicago Tribune account, the freighter had only seven inches of clearance on each side at Van Buren Street. Even now, one has to gasp and wonder how the hell that happened. Luckily, we have these amazing old photographs to document the undertaking. In the above photo, the Marine Angel executes the tight turn past the Wrigley Building and narrowly misses the side of the river where the Trump Tower now stands The self-unloading barge was built in 1945 as a type C4-S-B2 fast troop transport by Sun Shipbuilding and Drydock Co....

The Fall Of Imperial Japan In Pictures 1945

In June, after more than 80 days of fighting, Allied forces captured the Japanese island of Okinawa, but at a horrible cost, with more than 150,000 casualties on both sides, and tens of thousands of civilians dead (many by their own hand). Okinawa was seen as a painful preview of a planned full invasion of Japan, and Allied generals predicted massive casualties if it took place. Following Germany’s defeat, the Soviet Union quietly began redeploying its battle-hardened European forces to the Far East, in addition to about forty divisions that had been stationed there since 1941, as a counterbalance to the million-strong Kwantung Army....

In April he promulgated a sweeping reform program that included autonomy for Slovakia, a revised constitution to guarantee civil rights and liberties, and plans for the democratization of the government. Dubcek claimed that he was offering “socialism with a human face”. Umbrella Rock on top of Lookout Mountain was one of the more iconic tourist spots from the 1880s through the 1940s. It appears perilously balanced, but more than thirty people can stand on its top at one time. During the Civil War, the Confederate army held Lookout Mountain until 1863. When Milk Delivery Was Done By Dog Drawn Carts Vintage Photos From The Early 20Th Century

These vehicles, typically pulled by a pair or more of canines, were a practical and efficient mode of delivery in their time. In the early Victorian era, Britain also witnessed the use of dog carts, primarily associated with bakeries. However, when dog-drawn carts were used on pedestrian areas, they were deemed a nuisance, leading to their prohibition in London in 1840. This measure was driven partly by concerns over animal welfare, as there was a belief that these carts might be cruel to dogs, although this was not always the case....

A Nostalgic Glance At American Shopping Malls Of The Late 1980S

In 1989, Michael Galinsky, then a 20-year-old student, took a month to traverse the U.S. Everywhere he went, he documented the same place: the shopping mall. The results are now an archive of a vanished world, simultaneously familiar and foreign, trivial and full of meaning. Starting in the winter of 1989 with the Smith Haven Mall in Garden City Long Island, Galinsky photographed malls from North Carolina to South Dakota, Washington State, and beyond....

Victory for the Luftwaffe in the air battle would have exposed Great Britain to invasion by the German army, which was then in control of the ports of France only a few miles away across the English Channel. In the event, the battle was won by the Royal Air Force (RAF) Fighter Command, whose victory not only blocked the possibility of invasion but also created the conditions for Great Britain’s survival, for the extension of the war, and for the eventual defeat of Nazi Germany....
