Despite sometimes appearing stern or sitting apart, it’s clear that they still adore each other as shown by their sweetly shy smiles, flirting, tender touches, giggles, and happiness. In the 19th century, love and courtship were often subject to strict societal expectations and customs. Marriage was typically viewed as a necessary and desirable institution, and courtship was a means to find a suitable partner for life. During this time period, courtship was generally a formal process. A man interested in a woman would typically need to first ask for permission from her father or another male relative before pursuing a relationship with her. Once permission was granted, the couple would typically engage in a period of chaperoned dates, during which they would get to know each other better. During these dates, there were many rules that governed appropriate behavior. For example, physical contact was often limited, and public displays of affection were generally considered inappropriate. Instead, couples would exchange letters or small gifts as tokens of their affection. Marriage proposals were also often formal affairs, with the man formally asking the woman’s father for her hand in marriage. Once permission was granted, the man would propose to the woman, typically with a ring, and the couple would begin planning their wedding. People typically met through their families, social networks, or community activities. This was a time before the widespread use of technology and transportation, so people’s social circles were often more limited than they are today. One common way that people met potential partners was through family introductions. Parents, grandparents, and other family members would often play an active role in matchmaking, especially among the upper classes. They would introduce their children to other families with eligible young men or women. Another way that people met potential partners was through social gatherings, such as dances and parties. These events were often hosted by local community groups or churches and provided an opportunity for young people to socialize in a more relaxed and informal setting. In addition, people often met through work or school. This was especially true for men, who were more likely to have opportunities to meet women through their jobs or educational pursuits. For example, a man might meet a potential partner through a colleague, a client, or a fellow student. One of the most common ways that people expressed love was through letter writing. Letter writing was an important form of communication during this time period, and it provided a way for couples to express their feelings to each other over long distances. Love letters were often elaborate, with detailed descriptions of the writer’s emotions, hopes, and dreams. Couples also expressed love through small gifts and tokens of affection. These could include items such as lockets, rings, and other pieces of jewelry, as well as more personal items such as locks of hair or photographs.
